What is Costume Jewelry?
Costume jewelry is very popular in the fashion world today, but the name can be confusing to people. Costume jewelry sound like something you would wear on stage in a play or with a Halloween costume. However, this type of jewelry has nothing to do with that.
Costume jewelry might be more appropriately named “Outfit Jewelry” or “Fashion Jewelry.” It’s basically a cheap accessory that is made to be worn with specific outfits. Back when it first became popular in the 1920′s an outfit was called a costume. Hence the name, costume jewelry.
This type of jewelry is made of cheaper materials than what you would see if you were to go look in a jewelry store. It is usually made up of things like glass, plastic and synthetic stones. Many department stores or fashion boutiques often carry it. Some will also carry higher end costume jewelry that is made from silver over brass or gold over silver.
Fashion costume jewelry can be a really great and fun way to express yourself. It’s informal enough that you can wear it with nearly any type of outfit. It also comes in so many different designs that it’s easy to find a piece that expresses just how you’re feeling. People wear it to the beach, for a night out on the town, to work and even to their wedding. In fact, there are stores out there that are dedicated to just selling bridal costume jewelry.
There’s really no rules to what you can or can’t wear with costume jewelry. You can mix and match any types of rings, necklaces and earrings. The whole idea is to have fun with it. As long as you’re happy with the combination, that’s all that matters!
There’s also a completely different level of fashion jewelry called vintage costume jewelry. This is actually what today’s costume jewelry is modeled after. These are pieces that were designed and made in the 1920s and afterwards. Many collectors spend their lives amassing large collections. Since this type of costume jewelry is so sought after, pieces can be very expensive. Unless you are a collector, there’s really no reason to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on antique jewelry (unless you just like to spend money.)
Next time you’re out shopping, see if you can find some cheap costume jewelry. It is one of the cheapest ways to add style and personality your outfit.
